Some of the 9th grade students at La Salle visited Mt. Pleasant a month ago and they gave us a tour of their school when our group first arrived in Oaxaca. At pm yesterday we were able to go with one of these students and meet their family and spend the whole evening with them!
Juanjo and his family are incredible! I met his parents, his sister Julia, dog Lulu, and two parrots. Juanjo and his sister speak conversational English, and his mother knows some English as well, and we got to know each other very well over the course of the night. Within a half hour of being in their house, Julia told me that this is now my house and she is my sister, Juanjo is my brother, and her parents are my parents. They are so welcoming!!!
The dinner at their house was very good! And Junajo and I had a blast speeding throughout nearby parts of town on his 4-wheeler!! After taking turns driving the quad, we met with his family at an ice cream place before dropping the quad off at home and driving out for a tour of the city. Driving up part of the mountain toward the large amphitheater, we talked and learned a lot about each other and our cultures.
After the tour we went to the Socolo and walked around the busy town center, watching dancers, musicians, and vendors flood the streets! I tried some Blotes (corn on the cob covered in mayonnaise, queso, and chili powder), a Tlayuda (a grilled tortilla with meats, queso, beans, and vegetables), and many various aguas de frutas. Everything was delicious and my only regret is that I became too full to try more!
My family was wonderful and I'll be going to one of Juanjo's baseball games this Saturday with his family!
